La Montagne Noire
Revel, le 23 juillet 191? (1915? ou 1916?)
Mon cher Adrien,
Ton ami Merle Antoine, 28e Compagnie, 14e Reg(?)
Revel, H-G
Revel, July 23, 191? (1915? 1916?)
My dear Adrien,
I haven't left for the front yet, but I'm not in Toulouse anymore, because all those who had been injured or sick have been sent to Revel, near the black mountains to train us before going back.
This is a nice country where people are very nice with soldiers and we're quite comfortable, except during boot camp that is tough.
Waiting for having the pleasure to see you again and receiving news from you, please receive my dear Adrien a warm handshake from me.
Your friend, Antoine Merle, 28th Company, 14th Regiment.
On the "Mémoires des Hommes" website (collecting archives from the wars and managed by the French Ministry of Defense) I found an Antoine Merle who died at the front on October 28, 1918 and who was born near my grandpa's home village (but not exactly next to it either). His regiment seems to be the 15th though, not the 14th. Is that him or not? I'm not sure.
