Chère Jeanne et la famille,
Je fais une carte sur le (?) pour vous dire que nous avons fait un bon voyage. Et le colis que j’ai emporté nous l’avons attaqué à Saint Sulpice et je vous assure que nous l’avons pas fait souffrir. Enfin pas grand-chose de plus à vous dire. Pour notre départ, je crois bien que c’est pour mardi prochain, mais j’en suis pas sûr. Je suis en bonne santé.

Dear Jeanne and family,
I’m writing a card on the (?) to tell you that we had a good trip. And the package that I brought we attacked it in Saint Sulpice and I can assure you that it didn’t suffer much (it didn’t last long). Well, not much else to say. Concerning our departure, I think it’s going to be next Tuesday, but I’m not sure. I’m in good health.
Your husband who kisses you for afar and to all.

Note: Cette carte -au vu de la date, le ton général- fut très certainement écrite alors que Jean venait juste de partir et n'était pas encore arrivé au front (c'est certainement là qu'il partira mardi). On notera aussi l'écriture soignée et à la plume bien différente de ses cartes écrites dans les tranchées.

This card -according to the date and its tone- must have been written just after Jean had left and before arriving to the front (this is the place where he must be going next Tuesday). Also note the stylish writing much different from the cards that he'll write at the front.
